Because I love R.E.M. so much more than I could ever care about Nirvana, it breaks my heart to argue against them, so I won't. I don't even have to. R.E.M. INVENTED Alternative. But Nirvana carried it from the college airwaves to a wider audience. And as far superior as "Losing My Religion" is to "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the latter is without rival in the way it energized the Alternative scene, to the point where Radiohead, THE band of the past decade, was passed off as Nirvana-lite early on.

If anyone deserves credit for mainstreeming Alternative it is REM. If you want to say that Nirvana owns the grunge scene thats fine but debatable but to say my statement was "Incredibly stupid" is falicious. Try to come up with a better insult.

They don't have this kind of music anymore. Sniff.

That's an incredibly stupid statement if you fail to mention that Nirvana brought alternative into the mainstream.

And the "golden age" og hippies is more suitable to place in the late 60s. 70s is glam rock and punk rock. 80s is synth pop, hard rock and MTV-style sweathearts. 90s is mainly grunge, brit pop and hip-hop. 00s is back to basic rock and pop with hip-hop increasing its popularity.Remember that it differs whether you're in the US or the UK. There are also many smaller styles of music significant for the decades, like the latino/salsa hype in the late 90s.

50s jazz and negro blues turns into rock 'n roll (rockbilly) suitable for the young white crowd; the music is mainly produced in the states throughout the decade and early 60s. Sometimes around 1963-1964; music is a wimpy hangover surf, juke box, sugar sugar medley. Up comes a rougher rock from England with bands like Rolling stones, the Kinks and the Who. Across the other side of the pond black urban tamla motown soul fills the gap left by rocabilly.
