July 2002We investigate a very different perception of beauty in Nigeria, host to the Miss World pageant in November 2002. Girls in the region of Calabar have to be fattened up, so as to find good husbands. Although the practice is both frowned on and illegal, there is no shortage of takers.

Holy..If I understand you correctly, you are saying that it carries on because they have their kids while young? You may have a valid point there. I know ppl from there, and they seem to be quite healthy. Unfortunately, there are some like that woman in the film that suffer with high blood pressure. Every culture has its dietary drawbacks it seems. In the US too many ppl are too fat also.

"Cultural evolution will prevail since nature has decreed that only the strong survive."natural selection cant do anything here cause they have kids when they are still young and young chubby women are very strong. for evolution/natural selection to have effect, the weakest should die before they reproduce.
