His came with thermal paste on the heat sink like some do but yeah he should have mentioned it.

Some CPU's already have thermal paste on it.

you should put both sticks in the ram slots but make sure that they are in dual channel (which optimizes preformance) Look in Motherbord manual for more assistance.
