Tricky - Black Steel

Cover of an old Public Enemy track, taken from his album "Maxinquaye." The lyrics seem to have an even greater meaning now than when originally written...

I like both, but think this is an easier listen. It's a good cover, obviously the lyrics are PE, but I'm pretty sure it says that on the inlay, and the sound is totally different, beats the hell out of most covers of good songs.

it's not better or worse than original. it's not brit pop in any way Those who can see the difference between trip-hop and any kind of pop or pop rock or between an interesting bassline and a dull repetition of stock samples and loops that kills your ears should know this. It's not a bad cover, just different. it has it's own qualities.PE had the raw power, this has a dreamy atmosphere. different music for different people.

I am familiar with the original Public Enemy version and this version.Hmm, let's see: They have the same lyrics, and therefore carry the same message, so I'm not going to get into that. This version has some better music to it, so that's a plus. Not being a fan of either PE or Tricky, I think I can safely say this. Then we can add the subjective comparison based on liking male or female vocals better. I won't do that, but I will point out that Topley-Bird sounds a bit more understandable.
