Never mind I figured it out, you left out the fact that after seperating you went into object mode

at 2:50 what did you do? it looks like you went out of face select mode?? I pressed P and seperate selected and I am stuck there, I can't select the plains that I just seperated??

you should subdivide multi and make it 7 because chess boards have 8 squares on each side
